Lola Adeyemi a Nigerian Canadian Immigrant launched her Food & Beverage Company It's Souper an Afro-Fusion Soup & Sauce line because she felt there was a need to fill the void in the Canadian Retail space for African inspired/ethnic recipes made “By Us for All". She was inspired by the fusion of cultures that exists in Canada, a yearning for authentic flavors from Africa, and a desire to share them with her community.

Stephanie Amos is a retail professional and registered dietitian with over a decade of experience in operations, merchandising, and inclusive sourcing. She has a deep understanding and perspective on the challenges facing diverse suppliers. The opening address will provide a comprehensive overview of the current political climate surrounding regulations impacting the NOW industry. Aaron and Huw will highlight key challenges and opportunities within the industry, emphasizing the need for collaboration between stakeholders to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes effectively. Aaron is the father of three, husband of one, and an aspiring amateur weekend athlete. He is an experienced executive with a demonstrated history of working within the natural, organic, and wellness industry for over 18 years. Aaron has led the health divisions for both food and non-food at Canada’s largest grocery retailer (Loblaw Companies), as well as co-founded Canada’s 16th fastest growing company, GreenSpace Brands (2018 Maclean’s Growth 500). Aaron is passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of Canadians through the support and activation of people, products, and organizations in the health and wellness industry.

Huw is the President of Impact Public Affairs and specializes in government and media relations. With extensive experience in the print and broadcast media, he has appeared frequently as a corporate spokesperson on CBC and CTV national news. Mr. Williams’ government experience is diverse, having served as Acting Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada; as a Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of Constitutional Affairs; and as a Legislative Assistant to the Speaker of the Alberta Legislative Assembly. He also served as an intern to a United States Congressman from the Sixth District of Indiana. Mr. Williams authored “A Government Relations Guide For Directors of Non-Profit Organizations” published by the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE). He also served on the board of directors for the Government Relations Institute of Canada (GRIC). In 2010, Williams was named worldwide Public Affairs Professional of the Year finalist by PRNews Magazine. Williams’ other accolades include the CSAE Griner Award for outstanding “Business Excellence”, one of The Hill Times’ Top 100 lobbyists in Canada, and the Ottawa Business Journal’s “Top Forty under 40 Award” for professional success and community involvement. Mr. Williams holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from the University of Calgary. He has also completed studies at the Université de Tours in France and is bilingual.

9:50–10:20 AM: Scientific Evidence to Inform Food and Nutrition Policy

Speaker: William Yan

The session will explore the intricacies of evidence-based policy and regulation in the food industry, offering insights into overcoming challenges of complex issues exacerbated by limited research funding. William will highlight US and Canadian examples of Tripartite Model of food and nutrition research collaboration, drawing examples from relevant areas such as “ultra-processed food”, and, and Non-Nutritive Sweeteners within the contemporary landscape of the NOW industry.

Dr. Yan obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in Microbiology and Ph.D. degree in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases from the University of Alberta. He completed his post-doctoral training at Tufts University Medical School in Boston, MA before beginning his career in Health Canada’s Food Directorate as a Research Scientist in 1995. Between 1999 and 2009, he was Head of the Office of Biotechnology, Chief of the Evaluation Division in the Bureau of Microbial Hazards, and Director of the Health Effects Division at the Pest Management Regulatory Agency. In 2010, Dr. Yan was appointed Director of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences in the Food Directorate. Over a 10 year tenure, he led several high profile ministerial priorities under the Healthy Eating Strategy: the amendment of the nutrition labelling regulations; the prohibition of partially hydrogenated oils; sodium reduction, and the development of the front-of-package nutrition labelling regulations. He also led the work in developing a regulatory framework for products in the Food/Natural Health Products interface resulting in the publication of the new Supplemented Foods Regulation in July 2022. In addition to his achievements in Health Canada, Dr. Yan has also helped shape the minds of students and young professionals as adjunct and part-time professor at the University of Ottawa for over 25 years. After retiring from Health Canada in 2022, Dr. Yan has continued his teaching of undergraduate and post-graduate programs at the University of Ottawa. In 2023, Dr. Yan’s career achievement was recognized by his appointment as Health Products and Food Branch Scientist Emeritus at Health Canada.

10:20–10:50 AM: Balancing Safety and Success: Unveiling the US Regulatory Model for Natural Health Products

Rick is Co-Founder, President, Regulatory and Scientific Affairs, and Sr. Clinical Toxicologist at SafetyCall International L.L.C., a triple licensed healthcare firm serving industry in the areas of adverse event management and regulatory reporting, post-market surveillance, and product safety. He is also a Clinical Professor of Pharmacy in the department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota. He holds an additional appointment at the rank of Professor at the University of Mississippi College of Pharmacy and the National Center for Natural Product Research (NCNPR). Dr. Kingston’s professional and academic career spans over 40 years and his expertise encompasses the areas of consumer product post-market surveillance, adverse event incident data analysis, poisoning epidemiology, clinical toxicology and pharmacology, injury prevention, poison control and product safety regulatory policy.

Dr. Griffiths is responsible for CRN’s science-based international policy and regulatory work, and is the CRN staff liaison for CRN International (CRN-I). He has more than 35 years of experience in the area of food safety and regulatory affairs. Prior to joining CRN, he spent five years with the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) where he managed food and dietary supplement strategic initiatives, including those related to global food and dietary supplement alliances. He began his career as a regulatory review toxicologist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. His background also includes various scientific and regulatory positions at a number of international companies and organizations. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed publications, as well as the trade press. He holds an adjunct faculty appointment at JSS University in Mysore, South India, teaching graduate students on nutrition and regulatory topics. Dr. Griffiths earned his Ph.D. in Toxicology from Rutgers University in New Jersey and post-graduate work in Düsseldorf, Germany. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB-UK) and a Certified Food Scientist (CFS). He loves to travel, photography, numismatics, paleontology and started building intricate wooden ship models during quarantine a hobby he continues to this day.

As part of Save-On-Foods’ team of vice presidents, Brenda Kirk has held a number of titles, including vice president of innovation and strategic initiatives (2018), senior vice president of health, wellness and our brands (2019), and effective October 1, 2020, her current title of senior vice president of merchandising, where she is an instrumental part of the senior leadership team of Save-On-Foods and the Pattison Food Group: Canada’s largest Western-based provider of food and health products. Over more than 42 years in the grocery industry, Brenda has honed her reputation as a dynamic, strategic and committed leader who’s focused on achieving results and doing what’s right for her team and customers.

Matt is the President & General Manager of LeBeau Excel Ltd with over 30 years’ experience in the food/NHP business holding senior positions with Loblaw Companies Ltd., SunOpta Inc. (TSX:SOY) and a former owner/executive at Puresource Inc. distribution based in Guelph ON.

Matt is currently a board member of Plant Based Foods of Canada. He is a past Board Chair for the Organic Council of Ontario. In this capacity he held a seat on the President’s Council a gathering of Chairs and Presidents of Ontario’s agricultural organizations to discuss the broad issues and challenges facing Ontario agriculture directly with the Premier of Ontario once a quarter. Matt also held the Ontario seat on the Organic Federation of Canada (OFC). Matt was also the sales & marketing representative on the Organic Research & Innovation Working Group as part of CFIA’s Organic Products Roundtable.

Kyle Marsham, a dynamic presence in the CPG industry, spearheading marketing efforts at Marsham Natural Products Brokerage, founder of GreenFresh, and Host of the 'Time to Grow' podcast. With his expertise in retail, marketing, and brand strategy, Kyle aims to elevate food and beverage brands, emphasizing growth and maximizing returns for all stakeholders.

In recent years, Health Canada has increased its scrutiny of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) within the Natural Health Products (NHP) industry. This began with a pilot on-site NHP GMP inspection program in March 2021, involving 36 manufacturing and import sites. Although the pilot phase has concluded, Health Canada is now committed to conducting comprehensive NHP GMP inspections, involving more companies.

During this presentation, Dr. Powers will discuss various aspects of NHP GMPs, including proposed revisions, and NHP GMP inspection process all framed based on findings from inspections conducted to date. This information is indispensable for any Canadian enterprise engaged in the manufacturing, packaging, labeling, or importation of NHPs.


Dr. Jon-Paul Powers is a partner and scientific advisor in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. Working chiefly with the firm's Food & Beverage Group, he advises clients on a range of complex scientific, regulatory and compliance matters pertaining to foods, supplemented foods, natural health products, cosmetics and pet supplements. In addition to product and site requirements, Dr. Powers assists clients in need of scientific support pertaining to health claim substantiation and marketing, health risk assessments, product testing and quality management systems.

Dr. Powers has worked directly for Canadian manufacturers and distributors of foods and natural health products where he was responsible for all aspects of regulatory affairs and quality management.

He holds a PhD in microbiology from the University of British Columbia and a BSc in biochemistry from Carleton University.
